Goodreads Synopsis

Oscar Wilde’s audacious drama of social scandal centres around the revelation of Mrs Arbuthnot’s long-concealed secret. A house party is in full swing at Lady Hunstanton’s country home, when it is announced that Gerald Arbuthnot has been appointed secretary to the sophisticated, witty Lord Illingworth. Gerald’s mother stands in the way of his appointment, but fears to tell him why, for who will believe Lord Illingworth to be a man of no importance?

My Take

Hands down this is my favorite play yet. What I liked most are the characters; Mrs Allonby, a lady full of wit who says the most outrageous and fascinating things. Lord Illingworth, a vain overconfident, wicked man, with a mind of his own and stands firm by his words. Reading these characters was such a joy!

The play discusses politics, marriage, social class and gender equality and how it has affected their individual lives. Oscar’s writing is lyrical, full of *hidden* humor, that by the time I was done reading, I wanted more.

Nothing should be out of reach of hope.

A Woman Of No Importance is a quick, entertaining read that is definitely worth your time.
