FromMyBookshelf: My Top 5 Genres

Hi friends and happy Wednesday! 😊
I get asked a lot what kind of books I like or what do you read most of… Something along those lines. More often than not I blank out before I answer and well, it gets slightly embarrassing.
Today I’ll be sharing 5 genres I tend to read from. This doesn’t mean I don’t read from other genres, I do, just not that often.

  • Literary Fiction
  • Historical Fiction

  • Classics
  • African Literature
  • Non- Fiction (memoirs & essays)

Bonus – Crime Fiction and Thrillers

If you’ve been following my blog over the years you’ll probably see that it reflects this list more than anything.

What are your go to genres? Points if you give me a recommendation from it.

  1. Hallo, Hallo Fay,

Funny story? It wasn’t until I started book blogging back in 2013 did I take full stock and notice of the fact that I truly LOVE #HistFic and read it quite frequently throughout the year! I read a wide variety of genres and strangely it never occurred to me to take notice of which ones percolate towards the top? If I had to speculate though – we share a few in common:

    1) Historical Fiction
    2) INSPY Literature (ie. Contemporary, Historical, Biblical HistFic, etc)
    3) Mystery | Suspense | Thriller (ie. Predominately Historical with some Contemporaries!)
    4) Speculative Fiction (ie. Sci Fi, Fantasy & Cosy Horror or broad Spec)
    5) Women’s Fiction

You brought up an interesting curveball of a question to explore… is this part of a meme? Or just something you developed? I might explore it on my blog this week… hmm… I wonder if I give it a good think if I’ll stay committed to this off the cuff response of 5 or if it will alter? Thanks for nudging me!

    1. Hi Jorie! That’s how I discovered my reading taste as well, through blogging.

It’s not part of a meme, just something I came up with based on my reading life.

Can’t wait to see your picks!
      Thanks for reading.

  2. We share all these genres in common, I do love factual reads, personal accounts and more in-depth narratives. Scifi and fantasy take the top for me, I got to admit, but there definitely a lot to be explored here.

I was wondering, are there any african lit books that are a top must-read for you? I can never get enough of the genre, and would love to have more recs 😌

    1. That makes me happy to hear! And excited.
Anything by Chimamanda is a must read. Especially Americanah & Purple Hibiscus
There’s also Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, What It Means When A Man Falls From The Sky by Lesley Nneka… I have reviews on them just put a name in the search bar if you want to know more about them.

      Thank you for reading!
