If there is one thing that changed the game for me when it comes to my reading, it definitely has to be Audiobooks. Before March 2020 I was very in the “Audio books are not for me” team but I’m glad I saw the light because Reader, I have read a lot as a result.

Today I want to share some tips that helped me, the app that I use and some recommendations to get you started.

There are many apps out there that you can use to listen to your audio books, but, personally I swear by Scribd.
Scribd is a subscription service where for $8.99 you get to unlimited access to ebooks and audio books. Magazines, articles and even podcasts.

For me I focus more on the ebooks and audio books. I found its cost effective, I get access to books that are not available here or I am not able to buy them yet, and, it makes sure I am always reading. If you use my link you get the first two months free.

Tips
1. Start with podcasts. I shared 22 podcasts that I recommend here that you can listen to if you don’t know where to start. Podcasts will help train your focus if you are prone to a wondering mind. If you get a hang of podcasts, then audio books will be smooth sailing for you.

2. Start with a reread of your favorite book. You already know you love this book, so it’s a good way to dip your toe in.

3. Read along the physical book. This will help you focus and concentrate and actually allow you to set your own pace.

4. Find your speed and pace. This actually ties in with point 3. One thing about Scribd is that it has amazing speed control. Choose the pace that works for you.

5. When you find a narrator that you like, read more of their works. With audio books, narrators can make or break a book so if you enjoy one, try other books they have voiced because chances are you’ll enjoy them too.

6. Listen while doing mundane, every day work. Now, I tend to also listen to audio books while sat still or even in bed, but for a start I’d say start with listening to them while doing your chores or on your commute, on your walk and then work up from there.

7. Experiment. Try a different genres and see what works best for you.

8. Enjoy. Audio books are books and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Book recommendations
Here are some books I read on audio, and are available on Scribd, that I really enjoyed. The narration is perfection.

1. Love After Love by Ingrid Persaud
2. Dial A For Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto
3. Behind Closed Doors by B.A Paris
4. The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey
5. With The Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo
6. I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid
7. Eight Perfect Murders by Peter Swanson

That’s it from me. I hope these tips will help you and if you do take my recommendation(s) I truly hope you enjoy these books just as much as I did if not more.
